Meni is short for Menihuni (men nee hu nee). The hawaiian legend of the menihuni says that before the explorers inhabited the islands, there lived a race of very small people, much shorter than you or I. When the first polynesians settlers came, the menihuni retreated to the hills and lived in the woods and behind waterfalls and were pretty much never seen again.
Islanders believe they are responsible for events that cannot be explained. Like if someone finished a job more quickly than expected, the menihuni must have come in at night to help. Children would blame the menihuni for broken windows, missing items and spilled milk.
